Using something for other than its original design/purpose is repurposing. The official definition repurpose is - to give a new purpose or use to. People buy old barn wood and use it to make furniture. Its original purpose was to provide shelter and its new purpose is to provide comfort and a place to sit. The military sometimes scuttles old war ships off the coast to create reefs and new homes for aquatic life. My friend and wonderful artist, Rebecca Bass (www.artcarmaven.com) uses old Harley exhaust pipes, broken mirrors, and many other things, to make award winning Art Cars like the Atomic Dog Art Car.
The concept of repurposing, to give a new purpose or use to, has me pondering on how it applies to life and us as pieces in the great puzzle of life. Personally, I think we repurpose many times in life. We do wholesale career changes because we get a calling. I can tell you I never had any inkling or thought that I would become a godfather, but I did. Tristen gave me a new purpose. I never ever had any thoughts about writing a book or writing period, but I did. People asking for help gave me a new purpose.
At our core, we all want to be needed and want to have purpose. That is how we’re made. How have you been repurposed?
