How
Far?
“I’d walk a mile for a Camel.” Who remembers that ad for Camel smokes? So I have a quick question for you. How far would you walk to honor a friend that
died in the war? Well, if you are part
of the Air Force Special Tactics Team, that number would be 812 miles.
This morning the guys started the annual Tim Davis Memorial
Walk in San Antonio. They will walk from
Medina Base in San Antonio and finish on the 26th at Hurlburt Field
in Ft. Walton, FL. Why start in San
Antonio and walk to Florida? The Special
Tactics Selection Course starts in San Antonio, and for those who make it
through that part of the pipeline, the course wraps up in Florida. Tim was an Air Force Special Tactics Combat
Controller that died in action in 2009. Three
years ago, a few of his friends decided to do something Tim liked to do to honor
him along with other members of the Special Tactics family that have lost their
lives. They ruck. Rucking was one of Tim’s favorite
hobbies. Rucking is pretty much hiking
with a 50lb backpack.
They only walk when they have lost members of the Special
Tactics Family. Three of the soldiers on
the helicopter that went down in August were part of the family: TSgt
John Brown, TSgt Daniel Zerbe and SSgt Andrew Harvell.
The walk actually has a dual
purpose: honor our fallen and raise money and awareness for the Special
Operations Warrior Foundation. The
foundation is a 501 c-3 charity that helps the families of fall Operators
across all the Special Operations units in all military branches. They provide assistance, scholarships for the
kids, and overall support.
You can follow the team on www.specialopswalk.com as they make
the trek to Florida. I would ask a quick favor of
everyone this morning. Please keep the
team and the families of the fallen in your thoughts and prayers. To my friends in Special Tactics and to all members
of the military, thank you for what you do.
