We all experience SD, sensory
deprivation, at some point. The official
definition of SD is the deliberate removal of stimuli from one or more of the
senses. As kids, we blindfolded each
other and experienced the Halloween haunted houses were we could touch but not
see certain things and told they were brains or whatever. Sensory deprivation can also be beneficial
and therapeutic. Studies have shown that
short term SD can actually help us relax and lower blood pressure. It is similar to some of the benefits of
meditation.
With everything we are exposed to
daily along with being electronically tethered to a dang phone, I think most of
us experience excessive sensory overload than deprivation. There is way too much going on around
us. That’s why we all need an amount of
down time. We need some quiet to allow
our body and mind to relax. I strive to
have at least 20 minutes of quiet time in the Bubba chair each day. I close my eyes and the only things I hear
are the birds outside and ceiling fans.
It helps clear some of the daily chatter out of my head. Other times I turn off the phone and computer
for a while. Most any day, you can find
an article on the effects of stress on the body. Give yourself a little SD break each
day. You will be surprised how much
better you will feel.
