5 Things

I read an article online on the top five challenges of small businesses.  They range from missing the mark on funding, challenges regarding growth, and of course, employees.  As I read the list, I kept thinking about one particular thing that can make or break most any event or situation, focus.

Most people say they want to have their own business to be their own boss and control their own destiny, but when they get into it, they find they work more than ever, have hired people on whims, run short on money, or grow too fast.  When you experience success and are growing, it is tempting to spend the money rather than exercise a little caution, or maybe expand in to other areas too quickly.  Call it the mission statement, core values or whatever term you like, but you have to maintain your focus on the goal in order to be successful.  I’m a contractor by choice, and my mission statement is simple; in fact, it is one word, Balance.  My definition of balance is to work enough to support my lifestyle and have time to do the things that are important to me like spending time with those in my life that matter and to volunteer, give back, and help others.

What’s your personal mission statement?
