I Get It

Can you ring the recovery vehicle, please?  Translation, please call a tow truck.  I need to raise the bonnet.  Translation, I need to open the hood on the car.  Great, it’s prepped and ready for the “respray.”  Translation, the car is ready to be painted.  I heard those three phrases on a program from the UK about car restoration.  As I watched the show, I thought more about the different terms they used and what they meant here in the states.  In most instances, I could figure out the meaning based on what they were doing at the time.  Even though I may not know what their words meant at the time they said them, I could typically figure out what they were communicating.

Funny, how most anything can draw me back to two of my favorite subjects, communication and listening.  We may not always understand or know what the words mean, but if we watch and listen long enough, we can normally figure out what the other person is attempting to communicate.  When we become better listeners, we become better communicators, and better communicators just “get it.”
