“I am who I am and that’s all that I am.” – Popeye
I think Popeye had it right.
You name it and there is some type of cause out there related to
acceptance: religion, lifestyle choices, political leanings, ethnicities, etc. Maybe I missed something along the way, but
when did being accepted become such a hot and divisive topic. You can’t read a paper, listen to the radio,
or watch television without seeing someone “fighting” to be accepted. There’s the “fight” for lifestyle choice
acceptance, religious choice acceptance, political alignments, and on and on.
Yes, I know it is a fundamental need in all of us to feel
wanted, needed, and accepted, but shouldn’t that start with “me”? Accepting who we are and realizing it really
does not matter what anyone else thinks is the first step to self-
awareness. Sure, I want people to like
me, but if they don’t, I really don’t care.
Honestly, I don’t care. Why
should I give energy or burn cycles on a situation that makes no difference in
my life. Whether or not someone accepts
me, is totally immaterial to who I am.
I’m 53, white, banged up with scars all over me, Harley
riding, God fearing, live in a metal house, beer drinking kinda guy. Now DAMN IT, you BETTER accept me for who I
am. Sounds kinda silly when you read it
doesn’t it.
So I’m curious. Is it
me, or has a big part of this world forgot where acceptance really starts, with
“me”?
