Typically, at some point during the weekend, we have a get
together at Nora and David’s house for some sun, pool time, tasty beverages, and
lots of fun. Yesterday we had pool time,
well a little, and lots of fun but no sun.
A nice healthy band of thunderstorms decided to visit Houston. Rather than scrub the get together, we
improvised and moved under the patio cover.
We improvised.
The sunny day party morphed into the rainy day party. We pitched some snacks on the table, grilled
some meat, listened to music and rain, and laughed a lot. We even had a few blowing beer through the
nose moments from laughing so hard. The
weather did not change good friends getting together for some fun and
comedy.
There was a long period of time where I was all about
sticking to the plan and timeline, and any deviation from the plan would get me
spun up or cranky. I now consider
learning to improvise to be one of the most useful and best things I’ve learned
in life. Having a plan and a timeline is
a great thing, but even the best of plans need to have contingencies for the
unplanned and unexpected. Are you a by
the plan person that gets wiggy when things are not going per the plan, or are
you a roll with the changes kinda person that makes the plan up as you go
along? Actually, there are times we need
a plan just as there are times we need to improvise.
