Chance or Choice

What is the difference between chance and choice?  In my mind, chance is ending up in a situation through no fault of your own, and choice is ending up in a situation by conscious decision.  Someone runs a stop sign and hits you.  That’s a situation of chance.  You go to a bar known for being a rough environment and you get into a fight.  That is a situation of choice.   In a situation of chance, there are sometimes no options to choose; however, in a situation of choice, there are still options.

Assuming the chance situation of a minor accident with no injuries, one can choose to blow a fuse and rant and rave at the other party, or one can assess the situation and move forward.  In the choice situation, there is also a decision point on how to respond.  Choose to go into a risky environment knowing there is a high degree of likelihood of an altercation, or choose to go somewhere else that is more inviting and less volatile.

Things happen in our lives that are beyond our control and things also happen that are within our span of control.  Whether it is chance or choice, we have a part in the outcome.  Choose wisely grasshopper.
