The Answers

“Why should I talk to someone…they can’t give me the answers…”  I heard that comment during a discussion about counseling and therapy.  The person making the comment was completely right.  A great therapist does not give you the answers, as they have not lived your life.  Rather, they help lead you to finding the answers within yourself.  Each of us has our own set of issues, challenges, demons, or whatever title you wish to attach.  They, insert title, stem from all levels of relationships whether it be parental, romantic, professional, or friendship. Encounters and experiences also play into our stuff.  Here is what I learned through lots of counseling and therapy.  I cannot change anyone in my life or change how events played out.  All I can change is me and how I deal with and react to relationships and events.

When I’m asked how I’m doing, my typical response is, “I’m all good.”  That does not mean I am not juggling chainsaws in my head.  It just means I know what’s happening and I am working the process.  That process is using the tools in my emotional tool kit that I learned from my counselor, Jamie.  She never gave me the answers, but she did teach me how to find the tools I need and how to use them to work the issues in my life.

The answers are always there inside us.  It just sometimes takes a little help to find them
