“A and F” are typically thought of in terms of grades in
school. Today, I am writing about a
different A or F, Acquaintance or Friend.
By definition, an Acquaintance is a person known to one, but usually not
a close friend, and a Friend is a person attached to another by feelings of
affection or personal regard. The people in your life take on a little
different complexion when you look at the true definitions.
For me, I have 100s of acquaintances, a few friends, and
only a handful, literally, of close friends that live in my personal
space. In my world, changing categories
from acquaintance to friend revolves around one simple word, trust, and yes,
there are varying levels of trust. If I step out and give someone my trust,
they are a friend. As I become better friends someone, that trust level grows
to where they are like family. There are
also times where it goes the other way and someone moves back to the category
of acquaintance. It does not mean they
are a bad person. It just means their
particular role in my life or mine in theirs is finished.
Acquaintances and Friends are necessary and required in
life. That’s one of the fundamental tools we use to develop relationships on
all levels. It’s how we find friends,
boyfriends/girlfriends and husbands/wives.
Make sense?
