For 11 years now, I’ve owned the domain name, Hot Brown Water. One day, I may
write another book about everything I’ve learned at the coffee shop. I first used
the term one morning at Starbucks with Ethan, the barista, when I walked in and
ordered hot brown water. It gave me a
big smile to watch him laugh for a bit. In
its purest form, coffee is nothing more than hot brown water with flavor and
caffeine to give you a little rush for the day. To this day, I still see hot brown water in a
different light. I see it as a social
catalyst. Hot brown water is how I met Becca,
Doug, George, Patrick, and so many others.
You want to meet for coffee? Have you met
someone for coffee, just sat there, said nothing, and then left? Nope! I’ll
shoot a note to friends asking to meet for beers or coffee to plot our next
steps toward world domination. I can say with certainty the invites have zero
to do with the actual beverage and everything to do with social time. Hot brown water has afforded me the luxury of
meeting some of the most interesting people, provided the opportunity to
develop new friendships, and been the source of inspiration for many of the
things I write.
Get that social catalyst in action today. As I say often: The activity doesn’t matter. It’s the time together that’s important. Who wants to meet for some hot brown water, or
a beer, or whatever? All sorts of goodness
will come out of it.
