Thought of the Day 8/28/09

Something Different

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember: An amateur built the Ark-professionals built the Titanic.” - Unknown

The Chronicle had the Fall Bazaars & Festival insert in this past Sunday’s paper:
www.chron.com/bazaars. It’s a listing of the various events and festivals around the state of Texas. There are all sorts of fun things going on around the state for the balance of the year. There are festivals for most everything you can think of out there plus some that would never enter your mind. You have your mainstays like the Texas Renaissance Festival, The Original Greek Festival in Houston, and the 36th year of Dickens on The Strand in Galveston. Then you have some others like the Scarecrow Festival in Chappell Hill October 10 & 11, The Creative Artisans Show in League City November 5-7, or The Daughters of the British Empire 36th Annual Bazaar on November 7th in Sugar Land. There actually 36 pages of events in the insert.

The insert got me to thinking about all the new and unusual adventures available to us if we just step out of the comfort zone and take a chance rather than do the same thing over and over. Heck, I’ve never been to the three I listed in the last paragraph, but I’m certainly considering them this year. When was the last time you did something totally different and out of your routine or comfort zone? Stepping out of the zone and experiencing new things is how we grow and learn. If you do the same thing over and over, date the same type of people over and over, or do the same thing in your job over and over, you get bored and stagnant. Some like to call it comfortable, but I contend you are still left wanting. Challenging yourself and trying new things keeps you engaged in your life rather than just coasting through on cruise control. Be a person that can say I tried rather than I wished I would have. Do something different today!

Action Item – Get a copy of the local festival listings in your area and pick a town or event you have never attended. You will get a new experience, meet new people, and learn something new. Who wants to go do something different?

It’s Friday!

A Little Neat
The Chronicle published one of my photos in their Travel Texas section of the web site. I took the picture two weeks ago on Sunday morning as I was coming back from Taylor. It’s called Sunrise on 290. It’s kinda neat seeing it online. Here is the link.
