Sometimes Worth Your Time
“Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road.” - Dag Hammarskjold
Everyone that knows me knows that I’m far from being a penny pincher, but I do get a little cost conscious when it comes to some things. I do check gas prices rather than just pull in the gas station. I do wait for the big sales at Old Navy to get my jeans and do use coupons.
There are all sorts of little savings opportunities out there if you look a little. I know. Clipping coupons takes times, but when you start seeing 15 to 20% savings or more on your purchases, it adds up. It is worth the time when you local at your total spend for groceries, gas clothes, etc in a month. I found a 10% off coupon on a web site for Mercedes service that I shot over Teri’s way. It saved her enough about $60 on the latest service or enough to cover the cost of getting her nails done today.
Technology is helping with the saving money and coupon process. Kroger’s and Randall’s now have it set up where you can download the coupons you want to your customer loyalty card, and the scanners apply the discounts when you check out. You just set up a profile online then download the ones you want. Kroger’s also sends me coupons based on my buying history at the store. For the things I buy regularly, I get discount coupons sent to the house. Last weekend it amounted to saving $13 on a $70 bill. Kroger’s also gives a discount of 10 cents a gallon on gas for every $100 you spend in the store. That was another $2.50 savings when I filled up my truck last time.
I also bought some new jeans during the no tax weekend. The jeans were $10 cheaper per pair plus the 8.25% savings on taxes for a total savings of $34.70. So just by paying a little attention I saved $63.20 on three transactions. That looks a lot different than thinking about the one coupon for 25 cents off paper towels doesn’t it?
Take a little time to set up the customer loyalty deals at Randall’s, Kroger’s, or wherever. Check those gas prices before you hit the pump, or look at the inserts in the Sunday paper. A little bit of planning on the front side, and you could be saving more money than you think.
