Thought of the Day 9/12/09

What’s The Score?

“…Even doing nothing is shaping your life…” – Ron Bennington

I was listening to XM the other day, and the topic was relationships. They were talking about the scenario where one in the relationship bails out after “having enough” as they put it. Ron’s quote/comment above was in response to a guy saying “I should have said something to her before she left, but I didn’t.” Isn’t that oh so true though? I bet you can think of someone right now that said: “I put up with his/her crap for so many years.” And the obvious question is, why? The dialog just further drove home my favorite soapbox topic of communication.

You can deny it all you want, but you keep score. Yes, you do! Yes, I do! Yes, we all do! That’s just one of the many non-productive and non-positive things the pesky ego does. Think about a fight you had where you or the other person was able to drum up the date and time something happened or was said. That means it was an event that left a mark and you kept score. Why else would we bring up stuff from the past when we get into disagreements? If we would talk about it as it was happening, the score keeping would be kept to a minimum. Skip the score keeping and get to communicating.

Action Item – The perfect score is 0 to 0. That’s a win for both sides. Work toward it.
