Thought of the Day 9/16/09

Are You Left Wanting?

“Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” - Mark Victor Hansen

Ok! What’s missing? We all have days where we feel like is this all there is to it? There’s gotta be more to it than getting up, going to work, working out, eating and sleeping then repeat the next day. Sure, there are routines that are just part of the day, but there is certainly more to it.

If you think or feel like something is missing, then it is missing. There are all things we want and desire in life. The difference between attaining your hopes and desires and not attaining them is pretty simple; it’s you. It’s all about you, your patience, your thinking, your choices, and your initiative. If you are waiting for things to change or be handed to you, you will always be left wanting. So how do you change from being left wanting to having? Here’s what works for me.

1. First and foremost, you need to define your wants and desires. You can complete this step with two simple documents: a desire statement page and a vision board. When you can read it and see it, things begin to take shape. Please note these are living rather than static documents. Be reasonable and start small with your wants and desires. The most common mistake in defining is defining too many things at once; therefore, you can’t focus on any one thing.

2. Develop an action plan to attain those wants and desires. In my world, we call them project plans where we attach a timeline and budget. The plan keeps us on task and on budget.

3. Monitor your progress and be flexible enough to adjust for the unseen. Adjusting does not mean you failed. It just means the plan changed a little. It’s called contingency planning. Life happens! Roll with it.

4. Focus! Focus! Focus! Stick to your plan and avoid what we in my business call scope creep. Those are things that people or events try to stick in your original plan that can derail the whole project. As I heard the other night on TV, how can you succeed and attain your goals without a vision?

5. Reward yourself for attaining your goals. If you goal is to pay off your car in 18 months, then celebrate when you get the original title in the mail. You accomplished a goal so enjoy it.

6. Repeat the process. When you attain one of your goals, move to the next. Repeating the process keeps you engaged in your life and free from being left wanting.

Being left wanting is part of being human; however, the size of your “wanting list” is totally up to you. Having a little bit of a list is healthy as it keeps you driven and engaged in your life. Remember, it is the only life you have, and there are no do-overs. Make the most of it and HAVE FUN. It is your choice ya know!

Action Item – Are you left wanting? Do you know why? That’s your assignment. Make the list and start working on the why. Add one little word to the end of each thing on your list: YET! It is attainable!
