December 20th – They Really Do Make A Difference
“I choose to believe I can and will change the world with my words and thoughts.” – Rodney Williams
I wrote today’s quote a while back, but it spoke to me again this morning. Just from the amount of things I write, y’all can see that I really believe words can and will change the world. I was reminded yesterday at my Dad’s house just how important a few words can be as I sat and watched my sister read the letters that Shayne has sent me from Marine boot camp. Then Mark read them, then Tiana read them, and then Scott read them. The words spoke to each one of them a little differently as I could see the expressions on their faces and then heard their interpretations of what the letters said to them. Five people looked at the same set of words from one person, and the words said something different to each of us. That’s just the power of the words.
Shayne has been going since November 16th. I’ve received three letters from him, and have sent him four. Before he left, I had not written a letter in three years. And I’m embarrassed to admit it, but those seven letters between us are the only ones we have ever written to each other. I still prefer face time with people so I can experience the entire communication dialog being given to me through the words, tone and body language, but I find words in a letter a close second. Why? Words are a gift and a blessing and to be to able convey your feelings and thoughts through your words takes effort.
Shayne not only writes me but also sends individual letters to his brother and sisters, Scott, my sister and Mark. There is no texting, emails, or phone calls. . He is learning to express himself through his words, the importance of family and what is and is not important in life. The only way he can do that right now is through his words. Scott put it nicely yesterday: “letters are important as that is the only real down time to relax and think a little.” Scott lived it when he was in the Army as a Ranger.
Watching the power of words in my family alone just validates that we all have the power to change the world a little bit with “our words.” When was the last time you took the time to write a letter to someone? I’m not counting emails or text messages, but a real genuine letter. Give it a try. Whether you type it or write it on paper, just do it. Change a life today with your words.
