Thought for Thursday

Do Something Good Every Day

“Keep doing good deeds long enough and you’ll probably turn out a good man in spite of yourself.” – Louis Auchincloss

With the holiday season upon us, you will see all sorts of stories in the paper and on the television about acts of kindness with the charities around the city. People do open their hearts a little more during the holidays and spread the goodness. I commend everyone that volunteers to worthy causes, donates clothes to Goodwill, and helps their respective charities. I often wonder though why it takes a holiday or a disaster like Ike to bring us together. What happened to the ever elusive and rare random act of kindness?

I was emailing with Robin earlier in the week doing the usual early morning chit chat and joke off. She then shoots me a note back that she was in line for some food, and when she pulled up to the window, the clerk told her the lady in front of her had paid for her goodies. Yep a total stranger had bought her meal. It was true random act of kindness.

The truth is there are lots of random acts of kindness out there that go unnoticed, and to be honest, that is how it should be when it is really from the heart. You do not need any validation or confirmation from the receiving party. You will know it in your heart as you will feel it. People get so confused on the definition of a random act of kindness. A random act can be a hug with a homeless person on the street that has nothing, a handshake, a smile with someone having a rough day, paying for someone’s meal, taking out someone’s trash, etc It is truly just an act from your heart with the intent of giving the receiving party a little joy.

As we all become more in tune with each other and the universe, you will see more and more opportunities present themselves to make a difference by doing something good every day.

Action Item – Do something good today. Make a stranger’s day with a random act of kindness. I can tell you from personal experience that the feeling is something else. It will make your day and theirs, and more than likely, they will pay it forward .

Let’s change the world a little by spreading kindness everyday rather than just during the holiday season.
