Are You Wearing Blinders?

We have all heard and experienced the sayings: “…they couldn’t see the forest for the trees...how could I have missed that…how did that slip by me…”

Yes, we all wear them. They are that accessory called blinders. Blinders do have a purpose. They limit the field of vision to a specific area. They are adjustable depending on how much you want to “see”. I recall telling Jamie I feel like I have blinders on sometimes. When they are all they way out, I take in all my past on the left and my future on the right, and that I try to pull them in to see and focus on the “now”.

Don’t get me wrong. There are some good uses for blinders: working horse/mule teams to keep them from distractions from outside influences, people when focusing on a specific job task, or athletes like runners or golfers when trying to stay in the zone. In most cases though, blinders typically cause us to miss something in life as they are too far out or too close and blur our field of vision.

I typically hear about blinders when someone is referring to a relationship or a certain person. When Shelley left, I did not see it coming at all. Why? I had blinders on. The right person can sometimes be three feet away having an engaging conversation with you. You feel something, you see something in their eyes, you sense their energy, but it all doesn’t register until they are gone. The next thing you know, you are standing there scratching your head wondering what just happened and end up saying something like: “did I miss something...I can’t believe that got passed me…how could I be so blind…what was a I thinking letting him or her pass through my life and not stop them...the right person was right in front of me and I just plain missed it…” And the simple answer is your blinders are on and your field of vision is blurred. Unfortunately, there is no Lasik surgery for blinders, but your field of vision can become clear by working with your blinders. Sure timing is also a big player in this equation of life, but God gave us some smarts and free will: PAY ATTENTION!

Action Item – Is your field of vision in or out of focus, too wide or too narrow? Do you feel like you are missing or have missed some one or some thing in your life? Take a look at your blinders. They probably need an adjustment, or maybe it’s time to take them off all together.

Listen to your heart and spirit to work on seeing clearly. If you get the tweak in your stomach around someone or when you think about them, that’s your spirit talking to you. Just listen and watch how clear you field of vision becomes. Make sure your blinders are not blurring your field of vision.
