Friday Commentary From Rodeo Rod

You Just Put Some Things Aside

I’ve written recently about how TOTALLY PROUD I am of my nephew Private First Class, Shayne Bofinger – USMC. There is someone else that I am really proud of too. My nephew-in-law: Scott. Here is why. Scott too served our country. He was/is an Army Ranger. Just like the Marines – once a Marine, always a Marine, the same holds true for the Rangers - once a Ranger, always a Ranger. All branches of the military have some type of rivalry with the others. That’s just part of it.

When we were in San Diego, we were all wearing USMC shirts with Shayne’s graduating class info on the front of them. For us, it was showing our pride, respect and support for Shayne. For Scott it was more than that. He was putting aside the rivalry between the Army and Marines for Shayne and the family. I know that shirt was probably making him itch, but he wore it anyway. Scott could have been a hard ass with narrow vision and not worn the shirt, but he put aside the rivalry for the right reasons. Wearing a USMC shirt did not change Scott the man. He is still an Army Ranger.

All too often, we are too rigid in our thinking and forget how to bend and put things aside. The old phrase is “choose your battles.” Since battle is a negative word, I have rephrased it to “choose your opportunities.” When you put something aside, it is definitely an opportunity for something good and different to happen. If an Army Ranger can put it aside, you can too. Thank you, Scott for your service to our country, for supporting Shayne, and for giving me a little inspiration to write this collection of words.
