Friday - Words For The Day

You Keep Trying

I was listening to one of the top pitchmen from television talking about the success rate of inventions. He said 90% of the ideas they come up with or review do indeed fail. Even as experts in the field with 27 years of experience, they still have only a 10% success rate. There were two things he kept telling people that called in: keep it simple and keep trying.

How often do we just give up? Sure there are times and situations in life where we just have to cut our losses and move on, but all too often, I think we just give up on certain things. We’re an impatient lot and want the instant gratification. That’s our silly egos in play again. There are lots of times I feel like I have failed and do sometimes retreat and go off the grid for a while to cope. Life is indeed hard sometimes. I acknowledge that, but we all have dreams and ideas floating around inside us. Just because something fails in our life doesn’t mean we are failures. It just means that particular event did not work out. That’s just the way the good Lord made us. It gets back to what I wrote the other day on perspective. We choose how to look at things based on our experiences and history. You can either think that nine of the last ten things I tried failed, or you can think about the one that did succeed. It is a matter of where you put your focus.

I think often of my dear friend, Johnny and where he puts his focus. It is very difficult for him to walk yet I watched him walk the length of Reliant Center twice during the rodeo. Sure I could have arranged for a motorized scooter for him, but that’s just not Johnny. It is difficult for him to get in my truck and sometimes takes a couple of attempts. He will laugh a little and say: “Come on feet…work” Sure I could lift him into the truck, but that’s not Johnny. No matter what, he just keeps trying.

Where is your focus? Do you make it harder than it has to be, or do you give up too soon sometimes? Just remember, there good Lord did not make us to be failures. We all have so much to offer and give to the world if we just keep trying.
