Secret Ingredients

I decided to have a little last minute Cajun cooking party tonight with Johnny and his mom. I gave them 15 minutes notice, and we were on our way. On the menu for the night we had chicken, sausage & shrimp gumbo and jambalaya. Mom took care of pulling the chicken, Johnny cut up the sausage, we all peeled the shrimp and I put the seasonings together. Mom is convinced I use secret ingredients to make the gumbo and jambalaya. I showed her every single thing I put in there, but there is one secret ingredient you can’t see but you can feel it. It’s the wonderful energy and love coming from the people that surround me. I watched Johnny smiling as he was cutting the sausage. Mom was laughing and telling stories while she was doing the chicken. Ever so often, both of them would just say thank you Rodney for having us over or thank you for letting us cook. As we sat down, Johnny said the blessing and was thanking the Lord for me, Judi, and Diane sitting with them at church this morning. He thanked the Lord again for the lunch we had together and one more time for having dinner with me and Mom.

After I drove them home, I started thinking about the secret ingredients in my life in just the last few days alone. Friday I was fortunate enough to share a few hours with Teri. We had a nice dinner, some conversation and trip to Lowe’s to look at front doors. Saturday, I attended the Poultry Auction with my friends Joe, Robin, and Oscar, spent the evening at the rodeo with Nora, David, Elbby and John, Sonya and Ray, along with getting some great hugs from Lauren. Today I went to church, then had lunch with Judi, Laura, Johnny and Mom, did a little shopping with Judi, then had a few beers with Clyde, Kathy and Mike. I ran into Laura at the nail salon next to the pub and shared 15 minutes of conversation. I spoke with Ticia a few times on the phone today. I then went to Kroger and that’s where the plan to cook came together.

There are so many secret ingredients that go into making my life the great event that it is every single day. Without each of you, my recipe would be incomplete. To Teri, Lauren, Laura, Johnny, Mom, Nora, David, Elbby, John, Sonya, Ray, Kathy, Clyde, Mike P., Oscar, Joe, and Robin, I just want to say thank you for adding so much to my life this weekend alone. I love you all.
