The Things People Notice
Here is another memorable moment from the cook-off. I had at least six people comment or ask me about the ring I wear on my left hand. It’s not a big ring with lots stones or gold like a Super Bowl ring. Rather, it’s a medium sized, sterling silver ring with a cross inset against a black background. It is called a Raised Fleuree Cross Ring and comes from James Avery Craftsmen Inc. Here is a link to the detail.

Like most everything else in my life, there is a message behind it. When one particular person asked about the ring, I told them there was a story, and they asked to hear it. Y’all all know how I like to share a good and positive story, and here I was with another chance so off I went.
The ring was a gift from Nora and David. Even though you can buy a ring similar to mine, you cannot get the same identical one as mine is a one of a kind. Engraved on the inside, it says: Paying it Forward 11-15-08. They gave it to me when I performed their wedding ceremony on November 15, 2008. The inscription references what I told them when they asked me to marry them. I asked them to just pay forward what they had learned from me in the way of communication, positive energy and thinking, and pretty much doing everything you can to help others and make the world a better place. As I wrapped up the story, I could tell by the look in the other person’s eyes that I had left them with something to think about. They were wondering what they could do to pay it forward.
There are opportunities every single day to pay it forward. There is something in your life that you can share with someone else to make a difference. Share a smile, share a hug, or give a compliment. You never know what the other person might have going on in their life at the time. You could say or do that one little thing that changes their life. Everyone has the ability and power to make changes in the world. Nora paid it forward with me last night. She gave me some words I needed to hear. And the irony is that they were something I told her a few years ago when she needed them. Nora noticed that I needed some words last night and she gave them to me. Thank you, Nora.
And for those wondering, yes I am an ordained minister and can perform wedding ceremonies in Texas.
