The Catalyst
I had dinner with Lauren and Tommy last night for Lauren’s birthday. They were telling me about all of the work the family has been doing around the house from painting rooms, installing a new front door, acquiring new patio furniture, and an overhaul of the landscaping in the front and back yards. These are all things that have been on the to-do list for a while, but everything did not start happening until a month or two ago. What was the catalyst that put everything in play? Lauren’s baby shower is coming up next weekend, and Teri wants everything nice and ready around the house.
Lauren is especially excited about her room and the baby’s room. She was talking about how bright and colorful the rooms are with the new paint. That’s a contrast from the dark colors she had in her old room. She made one comment that summed it all up for me: “I don’t think the house and yard have ever looked this good since we have lived there.” She was just beaming when she made the comment. There is a wholesale shift in the energy as they are changing their surroundings.
Some would say that painting and planting new plants is no big deal, and if you look at the specific tasks of painting and planting, I may agree. Anyone can sling paint on a wall or dig a hole and drop in a plant. However, we often forget the emotional component that come with getting rid of the old and bringing in the new. It gets back to the nice “C” word: Change. Teri, Lauren (with lots of help from Tommy), and Josh, are changing their environment.
The definition of catalyst is - someone or something that helps or encourages progress or change. We all know when we need to make progress or change something in our lives, but the catalyst is not always apparent at the time. Take a few minutes to write down one thing you would like to change in your life then try to determine what the catalyst would be to make that change. I’ll be your catalyst. Just call me.
