Happy Mom's Day

It Wasn’t Hallmark This Time

We all have heard the jokes about Hallmark creating certain events like Mother’s Day and others just to sell more cards. Being the silly engineer I am, I decided to do a little research on Mother’s Day, and I found the answers.

Ana Jarvis is credited with the creation of Mother’s Day back on May 12, 1907. She had a memorial service to honor her mother on that very day at her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her mom originally died in 1905. Fast forward five years, and every state was observing the second Sunday of May at Mother’s Day. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914. And that my friend is how Mother’s Day originated. It wasn’t Hallmark this time.

Honestly, everyday should be Mother’s Days. Our Mothers brought us into this world. They gave us life. How dang amazing is that? We should be excited to get them a card, cook a nice meal for them or take them flowers. All too often, I see and hear comments about “I have to get a Mother’s Day card…I have to go over and see Mom…Here we go, another Hallmark Day…” Mother’s Day should be an exciting time rather than a chore or an obligation. I don’t get to buy cards or flowers anymore as Mama died 18 ½ years ago, but I do get to celebrate Mother’s Day as she is always with me. I feel her in my heart.

Like I said, everyday should be Mother’s Day. Without them, we would not be here. Take time today to ensure your Mother knows you appreciate them. Make that phone call, texting or email does not count on this one folks, go see them, or make them that dinner. Ensure they know just how important they are in your life and to the world. To all the Mothers in the group, I want to personally wish you a Happy Mother’s Days, and to my favorite very soon to be Mother, Lauren, Happy Soon To Be Mother’s Day.
