A Good Slip

Slip The Punch

There is a sequence in martial arts and boxing called slipping the punch. It is the process of deflecting your opponent’s technique just enough to avoid getting hit. It is not a specific technique as it were but is an action. The most common slip is a quick slap of the punch just enough to deflect it past your face. There are other more dramatic slips, but the result is the same. I can do both but really prefer the simple ones. In martial arts, we refer to it as the economy of motion. In self-defense and fighting, milliseconds count. Do what works, in the shortest time possible.

The saying, “It takes two to fight” applies physically, emotionally, and mentally. I have learned to apply the slip the punch concept to other aspects of my life. I work to keep potential drama and conflict to a minimum by slipping in boundaries or just slip on past an argument by not participating. I stand down before responding when something gets to me. There are many ways to slip the punch.

Do you feel mentally and emotionally banged up? Is your head and heart sore all too often? Maybe you are taking too many virtual punches. Put a little economy of motion to work, and slip that punch.
