10,000
10,000 of anything is a fair amount. $10,000 is a nice chunk of change. 10,000 acres makes for a very nice ranch. The 10,000 I am referencing today is hours. 10,000 hours is the number of hours required to master a skill. Dr. Anders Ericcson conducted an experiment in the early 1990’s with three groups of music students at the Berlin Academy of Music. His study found the top or elite students practiced 10,000 hours or more. The good students practiced 8,000 hours, and the average put in 4,000 hours. He applied his study across various disciplines and skills and found the 10,000 rule holds true. There are some with natural talent and ability, but the study validated with 10,000 hour of effort, one can become an expert at a task. If you divide 10,000 by the number of hours you practice per week, you can determine the approximate time in years it will take to master your task.
Everything takes practice. The difference between mastery and mediocrity comes down to the amount of effort one chooses to put into something. According to my math, I’ve put in almost 452,000 hours into being Rodney. I desire to be the best Rodney I know how to be so I keep practicing. Bring on the next 10,000.
