Lots of Moving Parts

That’s a Bunch

We have 639 muscles in our body, and of that 639, it takes 300 to do what is perceived to be the simplest of tasks.  It starts with a B and ends with an e.  Would you care to give it a guess?  It is that thing called Balance.  I’m not making it up.  The act of standing upright and maintaining balance requires engaging 300 muscles.  When I first read the statistic, visions of muscles contracting and releasing popped in my head.  Then for some reason, the old commercial for the Weebles toys came to mind, “Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.”  No matter which way you push a Weeble, they come back to center, to balance.  Watching a baby learn to stand and walk shows how complicated the process can be, yet as adults we tend to take balance for granted I think.  I am not speaking of physical balance alone, but everything that comes with finding balance in life overall.

To me, life balance encompasses finding the sweet spot between your personal life, professional life, emotional life, mental life, and spiritual life.  It can indeed be a daunting task.  The ironic thing is we know when we are out of balance in one or more of the areas as we sense and feel it.  We miss time with the kids or lounging on the couch.  We get frustrated when we are working long hours way too much.  We have chatter in our heads to the point we feel run down or frustrated, as we cannot seem to find a clear direction.  Our hearts feel somewhat empty when our spirit needs attention.  All the signs are there when our life is out of balance, but we tend ignore them until they become overwhelming.

Balance takes work, but I think being out of balance takes more work.  Are you a Weeble or a pushover?
