It’s Complicated
I still scratch my head at the number of people who feel the need to put It’s Complicated in their relationship status on Facebook©. Relationships are indeed complicated sometimes, but do you really want the entire world to know your business? In fact, broadcasting it typically leads to more levels of complication as you continue to perpetuate the issue. All too often, you see the situation lead to online arguments with some pretty harsh things said for the entire world to see.
I’ve actually had conversations with a few people about the very subject of airing the dirty laundry on Facebook. Without fail, every instance came down to communication, or lack of, issues. Hiding behind the computer or phone does not make the issue go away. On the contrary, issues escalate as assumption and interpretation comes into play.
Communication can be a tough deal and even tougher when you are “communicationally” (yes I made up that word) challenged. The road to better communication starts with the art of listening. You will be nicely surprised by how quickly your communication skills will improve by listening. Maybe Facebook should offer a relationship status option of, I’m Learning?
