Wait For It
One of the most important components to comedy is timing. It’s that waiting for the right opening to drop the punch line. Deliver it too soon and the joke bombs. Deliver it too late and the subject is no longer relevant. Since I’m a bit of a brat, I wait till someone is taking a swig of their beer to drop the line. Richard and I have the process down to a fine science. Same thing happens with Sally. We know each other well enough to see the comedy pyramid building through facial expressions, body language, word trending, and our respective little quirks. We have timing and chemistry.
Timing applies to all parts of life: family, friends, relationships, jobs, home purchases, etc. We are an impatient lot. We tend to try to push things on our time rather than waiting for the right time. If I feel frustration building due to my impatience on the timing of something, I try to look at the event from the comedy perspective, “Wait For It.”
