Thank You for Talking to Me
I was at the gas pump and noticed a man crossing the street and somewhat heading my way. I was way tired and sweaty from my MMA class and leaned my head against the bed of the truck while I was filling up. I looked up and he was standing about six feet away. He said hello sir, and I knew he was gonna ask for something. I held my tongue and was glad I did. He told me his name then said, “Thank you for talking to me…so many people won’t acknowledge me as a man…” He said he was a day worker and ex-con that had made some bad decisions in life, was just trying to get by, and asked if I could help him out. He never said I need XX dollars for tonight. He just asked if I could help him out a little. I gave him some money, and he again said, “Thank you and thank you for talking to me…” I reached out and shook his hand, and he smiled and said thank you. I watched him walk off, and he did not talk to anyone else. Why, they all turned their back when they saw him walking across the parking lot.
Sometimes just acknowledging someone exists can do wonders for them and for you.
I knew there had to be at least one other person left in this world that is not afraid to say, "Hello, my name is Human Being, what's yours?" To the best of my knowledge, no Human Beings have been hurt in this dangerous but rewarding practice.
