In the technology world, leading edge and bleeding edge are two common terms you will hear to describe acquiring or rolling out technology. Bleeding edge is just what it sounds like. It is the latest and greatest, can run faster, jump higher, and make you the envy of propeller heads and geeks everywhere. It can also be so buggy and riddled with issues that it is painful and sometimes unusable. Bleeding edge requires a higher level of technical intestinal fortitude and a lot of patience. Leading edge technology can be best described as a former bleeding edge technology that has a little time under its belt. It’s more stable and established, has had some updates from the manufacturer.
I look at life experiences as sometimes bleeding and leading edge. I’ve hopped off into things solely based on hype and ego only to get bloody or left holding the bag, as I was impatient. As I have enjoyed more life experiences over the years, I find myself a little more on the leading instead of bleeding edge. I no longer need the latest new cell phone or newest computer the first day of release. I don’t need to get a new television each time a new technology pops up. I’m more patient and a lot more okay with letting things settle in and get a little more established. I still enjoy trying new things and hopping off into new adventures, but I do a little more pre-work as it were.
Whether you like being on the bleeding or leading edge, that’s totally your call. Just be sure you know what comes with each.
