I Gotta Know - NOT

Updates

I took my netbook down to the coffee shop this morning to do a bit of writing.  I have not fired up the little netbook in about three weeks, and I knew it would need a few updates for my anti-virus programs and possibly the operating system.  Boy did it ever.  Between application updates, anti-virus updates and general updates, the dang thing was updating for close to an hour.  An update to Adobe, 150 Meg of virus definition updates, and 18 healthy updates to Windows, and I did not get to write a thing.

I was laughing on the way home thinking about people and how we think we need to be in the know and up to date on everything.  Sit down for a bit and watch the people walking around with their nose buried in the cell phone or tablet computer.  What can possibly be going on that is so important?  Heck, I do it too.  If I wake up during the night, I sometimes look over at the phone on the nightstand and check what people have posted on “Face-Crack.”  Do I need to check, or will there be some information on there that changes my life, absolutely not.  Yet I still do it.
What’s the obsession with thinking we need updates all the time?  Maybe I should be like my netbook and just stay offline for a few weeks?  What could I possibly miss?  Chaz Bono on Dancing with the Stars?
