Leave it at That
A friend of mine was catching
static over the weekend from the current boyfriend that was giving her grief
about a guy she went out with 15 years ago. That is no typo; she was getting grief about a
guy she went out with, not a boyfriend but a date, 15 years ago. Did I mention the current boyfriend did not
even know her 15 years ago? Being a guy,
I certainly understand our stupid egos and insecurities, but “I got nothin” for
this one. All it does is validate what
Nora says, “boys are dumb!”
This little incident did remind
though about why the past has no place in the present. I remember a quote that ended up as one of my
first published pieces, “When your past controls your present, what does that
say about your future?” The best way to
stay out of the past is by maintaining healthy boundaries. If someone attempts to dredge up your past,
drop a hard boundary on them. There is
no upside to dancing down that road again. You’ve already lived it, got the
t-shirt, and have the memories. Leave it
at that.
