Guard Your Thoughts

I read a short piece about how whatever you are thinking about when you go to bed can stay active in your sub conscious for four hours or longer.  That makes perfect sense.  I know if I have something troubling me when I hit the sack, I cannot fall asleep.  My mind won’t slow down, and if I’m pissed about something, well, why bother even going to bed.  I know I won’t stay there.

I’ve read many books on sleep, meditation, and brain entrainment.  They all have a similar thread when it comes to relaxing the mind.  We need to allow our brain to rest.  We need to give it a cool down period prior to going to bed.  That means skipping reading or watching television prior to going to bed, as those things are forms of stimulation.  Remember, we typically have 60,000 distinct thoughts each day.  That does not include all the involuntary things our brain does like keeping us breathing.  That’s a lot of work, folks.

Restless nights typically lead to a very long day.  Give yourself at least 30 minutes to an hour to cool down prior to going to bed.  If you have a favorite prayer or saying that brings you calm and peace, recite it before you hit the bed.  Guarding your thoughts at night will lead to a great tomorrow.
