The Perfect Light

In drag racing, a perfect light is .4 seconds.  That is the amount of time to change from the yellow staging lights to a green light.  The drivers are always working to get the perfect light.  If they leave too soon, they “red light” and are disqualified on the pass.  One 1,000th of a second can be the difference between winning and losing a race.

When the line turns green, the driver releases the brake handle, hits the gas, grabs the steering wheel, and navigates that 8,000 horsepower beast down the track in less than four seconds and at speeds exceeding 330 mph.  Drag racing is one of the best examples of the importance of timing.

“It is all about the timing.”  I use that phrase at least once a day.  Meeting a stranger is about the timing.  Passing through an intersection only to see an accident happen in your rear view mirror is about the timing.  Knowing when you need help is all about the timing.  Personally, I am a huge believer in timing in life rather than coincidence.  I believe people, places, and events are brought into our lives at the right time.  If you find yourself red lighting more than green lighting, look at the timing.  When things align, as they should, BAM…you get the perfect light.
