I am
the Point of Contact (POC) for the Air Force Special Operations Rappel Team for
the annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day at RodeoHouston. ™ I have been in the
role for four years now and have developed some great relationships with “The
Guys.” That’s the term of endearment for
the Rappel Team. One of my favorite things to do after they perform the rappel is
watch the public as I move The Guys move around the stadium. It is indeed a rare sight to see a team of
highly skilled Operators in full gear complete with guns (mock M-4 training
weapons), cammo, kits, helmets, and such walking through the stadium. However, my favorite thing is watching the
people stop them to say thank you and to take pictures. We could not walk 10 feet without someone
stopping them. As one of them put it,
“Now I know what it feels like to be a pretty girl.” Another comment from my
friend Sandra, aka Wild Thing, was, “Well, y’all are rock stars ya know.”
Knowing what these men are capable of doing on the battlefield yet watching how
humble, courteous, and friendly they are, reminds me of how lucky I am to have
such great people in my life.
To
my friends with the 2013 Air Force Special Operations Rappel Team, thank you
for your time, your service, the laughs, the shots, and memorable moments. Yet again, y’all have made a big difference
in the world.
