When we were kids, our
parents would overrule us, bosses sometimes overrule our budget projections or plans
for a project, and judges overrule attorneys.
There are also times we overrule ourselves. Think about the jobs or
relationships where the logical thing to do was to walk away but we overruled
our logic with ego and emotion and stayed in a less than favorable
situation. A big part of the physical injuries
I’ve sustained in life came from disregarding the “overrule.” One incident that clearly stands out was
during a karate tournament where I separated my right shoulder. I popped my shoulder back into place but
rather than stop like the match judge recommended and I knew in my head, but my
ego overruled, and I ended up separating the same shoulder again and making the
injury worse.
When we “overrule” the
“overrule,” well, you know how that turns out.
The “overrule” in life has purpose.
It is there as a check and balance to keep us safe. Learn to listen to
and embrace your internal “overrule.”
It can keep you safe and healthy.
