“Sometimes you just
gotta get out of the car and run!” – Sam Kinison
Sam is my all-time favorite comedian. I was fortunate to see
him many times before he died. The quote
above was taken from a bit where he talks about how sometimes things just get
too damn overwhelming. Whether it is a
relationship, job, or whatever, sometimes we just want to run. I know I do it.
A lot of times when I mention Harley therapy, that is code
for me running from something.
Sometimes, I just don’t want to deal with the bullshit so I run. The difference is though that I know I’m
running. No matter how many miles I log, it’s still there. Why, because it’s in my head and heart. It travels with me until I face it. I also
know that when I stop, whatever “it” is will still be there. I’ve learned that
it is okay to run sometimes, as long as I remember that “it” will remain with
me until I stop and face it. That’s not
always fun but is necessary.
My therapist, Jamie Leonard, gave me some of the best words
I’ve ever learned, back in 2006 and I still remember them often: “You deal with
it now Rodney, or it will deal with you later.”
It’s okay to run my friends, but sooner or later, you have to stop and
face “it.” When you face “it” is totally your decision.
