I’m dating myself here, but who remembers the quote
above? It is from the original
television series in the late 60’s, Mission Impossible. It was the opening line to the recordings for
Mr. Phelps. As I was thinking about the
quote, it came to me that we have a mission each day when we wake up, and we
get to choose to accept it or not.
For me, the mission is to attempt to be the best person I
can be for the day, help others where I can, and be thankful for a good life.
Most of the time, I accept the mission; however, there are also times I do not.
Even though I try, I just cannot be “on”
all the time. Some days I just want to pull the blankets up over my head and
hide from it all, and I do just that.
At one point, I would feel guilty about hiding. I would replay the following thought in my
mind, “Remember, there are no “do-overs on life.” It is okay to have days where
my best is going to be hiding on the couch and turning the phone off. It is not a matter of wasting time. Instead, it is spending some time on me. If I’m down for the count, there is a
reason. If I am 100% on my game, there
is a reason. Sometimes we just need to
skip the mission.
