Contrary to Popular Belief

“I’m the rock that everyone leans on.  I have to be the strong one. Everyone in the family depends on me.”

I hear at least one of the sentences above all too regularly.  In my opinion, that is so far from the truth, hence the reason for the title for today’s collection of words.  I agree there are times we must be the strong one.  When there is a significant event, be it work, relationships, or family, someone must take the point and lead through the event.  However, it is impossible to be the rock 100% of the time.  Talk to someone claiming to be the rock long enough, and you will start seeing chinks in the armor which typically leads to a crash.  It happens to everyone without exception.

How often do you see stories of high-powered executives dying at a young age from stress or a heart attack?  How often do you hear parents talk about needing a little break from the kids?  Check the stats, my friends.  Stress is one of the top causes of death.  We are not made to be on 100% of the time.   We all need quiet days, spa days, Harley therapy, or whatever activity you choose to do to decompress and de-stress your life.  Assign any label you want, but make sure you get some, “Me time.”  Contrary to popular belief, the world will not stop if we take some time to recharge.  Rather, the world becomes a better place when we are recharged and smiling.
