“How many miles do you do a day and how long does it take you? I do 10 miles in 36 minutes, Monday through Friday to get my day going. Oh, I can only do 12 minutes. I’m working through a leg injury. How many minutes were you doing? I started at two then five, then 10, then 12, and I did 15 yesterday. Sounds to me that you are progressing a little each week. My foot is also working better than it was a few weeks back. See, you have to give yourself credit for the little things and don’t worry about the big wow moments. After all, the hardest part of the workout is getting here. See, that’s a big accomplishment already.”
That was the very conversation I had this morning with Brenda at the gym. I’ve seen her a few times and we exchanged pleasantries, but this was the first actual conversation. As we talked more, I could see her starting to smile as she was thinking about the progress, she is making each week. She even commented about how she didn’t even think about the increases of a few minutes here and there and the difference it was making. I suggested she track her time and progress as the small steps can make a big difference and told her how her how I track my mileage and time daily as it helps keep me focused. When I wrapped up my 10 and was about to head out, she said, thank you for giving me something good to think about.
I anticipate there will be other conversations about the progress she is making with her recovery. And just like that, a five-minute conversation made a nice difference in someone’s day. Go out and make the world a little better today.
