Years ago, I wrote this comment about relationships, "If you feel like you are filler, then you probably are.” You know the feeling where you feel/sense you are only getting the call when they have nothing else to do, or you hear from them during the week then they disappear on weekends. Then there is the all-time favorite, “I’m going out of town with friends. I’ll get in touch when I get back.”
Here is what I’ve learned about being filler for someone. They did not do anything to me, and I allowed it to happen by being readily available rather than saying no or walking away. For me, the bright light turned on some 15 years ago when I learned to focus on the 86,400 seconds in a day and understanding there are zero opportunities for a do-over.
Face it, there are times we need to say no and walk away from people. Remember, "If you feel like you are filler, then you probably are.”
