Paul and Linda
“What is uttered from the heart alone, Will win the hearts of others to your own.”
—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Wednesday afternoon was get my ears lowered day. I walked in the shop, said hi to Carl the barber (my second time at this shop) then said hello to Linda, and then sat down. Dr. Phil was playing in the background. His guest was Bishop T.D. Jakes and the topic of the show was relationships. And now for the funny part, I wrote yesterday’s TOD at lunch prior to even seeing the show. Every now and then “I listen” to the voices in my head.
They were specifically talking with two couples with control issues. In this case, it was two situations of controlling women rather than the normal controlling man relationship. After a few minutes, Linda looked over at me and said: “how do people get in or survive in controlling relationships…Paul and I have been married for 50 plus years and never had issues with control…I want to be with him and like being with him…the only thing I do without him is go celebrate birthdays with the girls from time-to-time...“
I responded in true armchair therapist form: “control issues run deep and typically go way back in someone’s past…and due to one or the other trying to function in a role they were not designed for…ya know like when a woman has to be the head of the household which is not her God defined role…”. The conversation moved on to discussions of roles.
Linda said: “my role with Paul has changed to not only being his wife but also his caregiver…ya see Paula has Alzheimer’s and degenerative heart disease…Paul is 77 and is very smart…he was a prominent attorney for a long time and a great looking man…in fact I keep a picture of him in my wallet from 40 years ago just as a reminder...we stay busy though…I take him to Kroger’s seven days a week for morning coffee and to talk to the group down there…he repeats himself a lot but they know he is sick and still talk anyway…” We continued talking about Paul until Carl was done. Paul popped up out of the chair and was ready to go. Carl had to hold him at the door and he was ready to roll. Linda paid Carl, and said goodbye. Now I did not mention earlier that Paul and Linda go to my Kroger. I will be going down there on some morning to sit and talk with them. I just feel that’s my next task.
So what is the story behind today’s TOD? In today’s world of disposable relationships, it just touched my heart to see two people still together and loving each other. Even though things and roles have changed, they are still a couple. Linda loves Paul and Paul loves Linda. Good energy J
Divorces and breakups happen in today’s world at the drop of a hat. It’s like people completely forget the original reason or things that brought them together in the first place. Sure you get to know each other through the dating process and sometimes you just find you are different people with different desires and on different paths. Things just happen sometimes. Relationships are work but good work as they are investment in each other. When you invest in each other, you are investing in goodness of each other and the world around you. Cherish the relationships in your life. They are indeed a gift.
