Thought of the Day 7/3/09

Many Hats

“Caring about others, running the risk of feeling, and leaving an impact on people, brings happiness.” - Harold Kushner

I have many ball caps at the house. There are some I wear more often than others, but they all have a place and story in my life. One of my favorites is a Late Night cap I got as a gift when I went to see David Letterman on the “All The People In The Audience Are From Houston” show.

Sometimes I wear one when my hair is all mushed up, but most of the time, I’m one of the smart people that actually use them for their intended purpose: to keep the sun out of my eyes. You won’t see me wearing one backwards or off to the side. I know their function.

Have you ever thought about how many different hats we wear in life? I don’t mean actual hats but more the different roles we play. We’re volunteers, bread winners, chefs at home, parents, friends, caregivers, auto mechanic, therapists to our friends, and authoritarian at the house. In our jobs, we are sometimes the boss or might be known as a subject matter expert, and for part of our life, we are students. That’s quite a few hats.

We all have many talents and make so many contributions to our immediate world and the universe overall. When you wear the therapist hat, you are helping someone which is goodness for them and the world. When you are a caregiver, you are helping someone with certain limitations in their life. When you are the subject matter expert at work, you are helping the company and coworkers accomplish goals. When you volunteer your time, you are helping someone’s cause.

What’s the commonality in the paragraph above? That little four letter word: HELP. No matter what hat(s) you wear, you are helping by making a contribution to someone’s life and energy, which ultimately helps the world be a better place. We all matter, we are all important, and we all make a wonderful contribution. Keep it up!

Action Item – Take a few minutes to write down all the different hats you wear. You won’t get them all down on the first pass. Review the list often, and you will see just how many different ones you wear. You will see how talented you really are.

Mike P. is moving into his new apt this weekend. A few good things have already happened. He donated a number items to a church for resale, donated five old cell phones to the Women’s Center and a truck load of clothes and furniture to Goodwill. And now for the funny part, he was cleaning off his desk and found two $100 bills in a stack of paper. Now that’s some goodness going on all around.

Pam B. will be moving into a new apt on July 8th. Congrats on the new place, Pam.

New Adventure
David Morrow will be starting a new gig with Face to Face Live. They are a managed telepresence and video conferencing company. He will be doing Business Development for them. Congrats on the new venture Morrow.
