Confession
“One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.”
- Lucille Ball
I’ve wanted to share something with y’all for a long time, but I’m just now up to doing it. I have a confession to make to everyone. I have an addiction. I’ve had this addiction for a very long time, but it has escalated to new levels in the past three years. I’m sure most of you have noticed, but I just feel I need to put it in writing. Rodney is an addict! He is addicted to laughter!
So did anyone fall for it? I am indeed addicted to laughter. Positive emotion and laughter are two of the most powerful and naturally occurring meds in the world today. And yes there is scientific proof to validate the healing power of laughter and positivity. There is an example in the book The Secret where a woman was diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her husband shifted everything to ensure that everything she was exposed to was only positive and funny. She watched comedies all day, did not have any negative conversation and truly focused all energies on the power of laughter. In three months, all traces of the cancer were totally gone. And no she did not take any meds or chemo during the three months.
You need more? Check out Proverbs 17:22 – A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up to the bone. Most remember the movie with Robin Williams called Patch Adams. It’s a story about Dr. Adams. He has numerous examples and cases of the power of laughter and the healing process. One of the best examples I’ve read about regarding the healing power of laughter is the story of Norman Cousins.
Norman was a writer for the New York Evening Post and also the Saturday Review. He was also a political activist, and a Professor at UCLA School of Medicine where he was a researcher in the area of biochemistry and human emotions. The irony of the position at UCLA is that Norman was not an MD. In 1964, the Dr.’s diagnosed him with a collagen illness and told him his outlook for survival was very grim. Norman made the decision to work on healing himself. He developed a program based on leverage positive emotions for their healing power. He would dedicate an amount of time each to day watching funny films for the laughing value. He ended up writing a book about the program called Anatomy of An Illness. During his time at UCLA, he also wrote a follow up book called Head First: The Biology of Hope. That one covered, in depth, the true healing powers of laughter. Norman defied the odds and lived until 1990.
Think about it for a minute. Think about the flush of good feelings you get when you laugh. Without fail, Richard and I laugh a lot every time we are on the phone and hanging out. It’s good for your health, your soul and your spirit. Start healing yourself today- Laugh Out Loud!
Action Item – At least once today, laugh so hard that people look at you funny.
