Thought of the Day - 7/15/09

“I’m Feeling Bitchy Today, Rod”

“We cannot really love anybody with whom we never laugh.”
- Agnes Repplier

Today’s title is actually out of a conversation I had with Nora on Sunday afternoon. She’s cut way back and almost totally stopped smoking. She can go days now then only have one. From what I’ve been told, coming off the nicotine can be quite the challenge some times and being “bitchy” can be one of the phases.

She snickered and said “I’m gonna have to get David to go walk the dogs or something so I don’t yell at him.” We bantered back and forth and I said: “maybe you can give him an I’m Sorry For a Future Bitching card? As we talked about it a little more, that really made a lot of sense. She knew she was irritable and could possibly direct it his way when he had absolutely nothing to do with her frustration. Literally, giving him a simple hand written I’m Sorry Card – Redeemable For a Future Bitching would make all the difference in the world. Why? Well the humor in it for one, and number two, she is communicating with him that she has some stress right now that SHE needs to work.

I’ve been with Nora and David through “the dance”. I remember the days when they were dating and would have a WWE Main Eventer with her yelling and crying and David shutting up and just leaving. I’ve watched the changes in them over the last three years. Gone are the days of the Main Eventers. Why? They talk. If she is having a rough day, he tries to help her and if she says “I need some downtime”, he DOES NOT take it personally like us guys tend to do till we “learn” it’s not all about us. He says ok and does something else. There are days he is a pain, and she calls him out, but they talk. It does make a difference.

“What’s wrong…I don’t know…what’s wrong…just tell me…leave me alone…FINE”

We’ve all had the conversation above, and we lashed out at our partner for no apparent reason. There were things bothering us, which they may not even know about or were involved in at all. There are just some times we have things on our mind and are either processing the thoughts and emotions, or maybe, just trying to find the words to talk about it. There have been many times where I said that very thing: “I don’t have the words right now but am trying to get my hands around some things. I will talk with you when I get it all figured out.” Saying that lets the other party know I’m not blowing them off. It communicates that I am working an issue and that they have not done “something”.

Think about how much easier it can be just by opening your mouth and let your partner know you have things working on you, or you need a little time to yourself to decompress or recharge. When you communicate what’s happening on a regular basis, you actually improve your relationship as you become better communicators and become more bonded/in tune so you “see the signs” as it were. Use the Good “C” word…Communicate!
