Carry-On or Checked?
“In life you can never be too kind or too fair; everyone you meet is carrying a heavy load. When you go through your day expressing kindness and courtesy to all you meet, you leave behind a feeling of warmth and good cheer, and you help alleviate the burdens everyone is struggling with.” - Brian Tracy
Remember last year when the airlines started charging a fee for checked baggage along with another fee for heavy bags? The original reason for the new fees was to help offset the rising fuel costs last year. Less weight on the plane meant less fuel needed to move the weight. I recall seeing my sister move part of the contents of her bag to Mark’s bag in order to stay under the 50 lb limit to avoid paying the additional fees/penalties.
The fees made people rethink their traveling and packing strategies. I know that I packed differently and would bring only what would fit in a carry-on bag. Sure, there are some trips where you can’t check the baggage due to the type or length of the trip, and so you make a conscious decision and pay the fee. And the irony of it is, the fee for checking a bag is minimal. I think maybe it’s something like $15. On the other hand, the fee for a heavy bag escalates by the amount of weight over the limit. It’s kinda like a speeding ticket. When you get past the first 10 miles over the limit, the fine goes exponential.
I’m wondering if maybe we can take a queue from the airlines. We all have some level of baggage we carry. If you think or feel, you experience baggage. That’s just part of life. Let’s think about it in terms of the airlines for a minute. When you have your carry-on, it’s pretty light weight and easy to manage. You can throw it over your shoulder and unpack/pack it easily. When you are over your weight limit on the baggage, what happens? You pay a fee that rises based on the amount of the additional weight. When you are emotionally stressed due to relationship issues or the like, the fee is usually restless nights with little sleep, losing weight due to the stress, and an overall feeling of being run down. These are all signs from your body and spirit telling you to review your baggage, to shed part of the load, and rebalance you baggage. You deal with it now, or it WILL deal with you later.
Action Item – What does your baggage look like right now? Do you have the carry-on, or are you way over the limit? Take an inventory of your baggage and adjust accordingly.
