Thought of the Day - 7/6/09

"The positive thinking sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible."

I watched a show a while back regarding vampires and got my first exposure to the term psychic vampire. Well I saw the phrase energy vampire the other day and started thinking and doing some research. As I read more, I realized energy vampires are everywhere in our life. You know the experience of an energy vampire. They leave feeling drained and tired after they leave.

They come in all shapes and sizes. The most well known is the drama queen. They are always the victim of whatever the situation is at the time. They have the ability to blow everything in their life out of proportion and can zap your positive energy before you know it. They have no regard for anything other than themselves. Energy vampires can also be the opposite of the drama queen and come across as the shy / quiet introvert. They too are draining but in the ever so slow and subtle way.

One thing they all have in common is that they have been hurt or damaged with some type of crisis somewhere in their life. They have energy leaks but sometimes don't even know it. When their negative energy consumes them, they look for ways to bleed (no pun intended) off the negativity by taking in your positive energy. At least they sense when something is wrong/negative about themselves.

Common traits of energy vampires include: they’re the victim, there is lots of complaining about their job, family, life, etc., they totally discount your boundaries, they attempt to deflect blame to everyone and take no responsibility, and enjoy being the pessimist.

There are many ways to protect yourself from energy vampires. In my opinion, the three most effective methods of protection are as follows:

Listen to your spirit. If something feels wrong regarding a certain person, it typically is wrong. Listen closely to what your spirit tells you about the other person.

Boundaries, Boundaries, Boundaries! When you feel them getting close to crossing a boundary, stop them. When they do not listen to your “No”, end the conversation. Put limits and parameters around your time with them.

Do Not Own Their Issues. No matter how much they cry and pout, you can’t take ownership of their issues. If you start feeling yourself getting down as they are pining away about their life, that’s a sign to get out and get out now.

They are among us. That’s just part of life. Just like the good and wonderful people we get to experience, we also run across the energy vampires. If you can keep the three methods above committed to memory, you can keep them in check. When they find their ways and stories no longer work with you, they will move on.

Action Item – Sharpen your skills to protect yourself and your loved ones from the energy vampires. If you feel one pulling you down, either leave or spin the subject away from the negativity. If they try to bring it back negative, spin it again. Keep spinning it till they shut up or leave.
