Totally Yours To Make
“Always do what you are afraid to do.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today is Heather’s last day as Manager at the Memorial Starbucks. I’ve been hearing things around the store for the last few weeks but did not ask or respond as it was her story to tell me. This morning she told me about it. She is stepping down from being a manager to return to being a barista at store closer to her house in Humble. She said, “I just can’t focus on doing the things in life that I really want to do while I’m working as a manager.” I made a little joke: “ahhh the ole I can’t focus my focus on what I want to focus on, right???”
Some would immediately see this move as a step backwards to go from a store manager back to being a barista, but I see it on the other side. She is actually making a step forward to finding a focus in life. Sure she worked her way up the ladder and will be taking a pay cut to go back; however, if it brings her closer to what she feels her focus is in life, then it is worth it.
We are all presented a lot of opportunities for life changing choices but sometimes avoid or miss them. Why? Change is scary as there is always an upside and downside. Everything has a price associated with it. You will give up something or someone to get a new something or someone. That’s just how it works. Sometimes it means leaving a job or moving to a new location. Other times it may mean changing your relationships both romantic and friends wise.
If you get the nice funny tingling feeling in your chest when you think about it, do it. If you get the sinking feeling in your chest, then don’t do it. Here is the difference in the simplest of terms. When you get feelings of goodness and you smile over the pending decision, that’s your spirit talking. When you get the feelings of angst, sadness or being uncomfortable that is your ego talking. Learn to recognize the decision drivers. Remember, the decision is totally yours to make.

There was a benefit yesterday for one of my old biker friends to help raise some funds to help him offset some of his medical expenses from lung cancer. The event was well attended and some nice “dollars” were raised.
