Thought of the Day 8/22/09

Like Trying to Put Smoke Back in This Cigarette

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” - Helen Keller

Today’s title is the lead in line to the chorus in Jason Aldean’s song - Back In This Cigarette. As I was listening to the song yesterday morning, I started thinking about what the line actually means to me. I kinda view it like when you say or do something. Once it’s out there, you can’t take it back. It’s said and done. I believe we all have spent or spend a fair amount of effort and energy trying to get the smoke back in the cigarette, and the reality is that it’s impossible to change as it has happened, PAST TENSE. No amount of woulda, coulda, or shoulda is gonna get the smoke back in the cigarette.

However, what we can do is be more attentive to the smoke on the front side rather than trying to put it back. Where is the smoke coming from? Typically, our ego is the source of any internal fire. Working with it determines the amount of smoke and flames. If you let it get out of hand, the smoke turns into a raging 5 alarm blaze.

There are some small but very effective methods to keep the smoke in the cigarette: pause and hold your tongue before responding, put the phone down rather than flame mail someone, and guard your thoughts and your heart. Don’t be the source and you don’t have to worry about getting the smoke back in the cigarette.

Action Item - No Smoking!
